Education

The Guild offers a variety of learning opportunities throughout the year. Look for announcements about guest teachers and lecturers, workshops, Turtle Camp, and learning retreats. Be sure to check the Guild’s calendar for special events and “challenges.”

National Workshops

Several times during the year, Las Colcheras invites national teachers to Las Cruces to teach their specialty to our members. Workshop participants pay a fee to cover the guest teacher’s expenses while the guild pays for transportation. The guest teacher lectures and provides a trunk or slide show to the membership at the regular guild meeting.

Marguerita McManus will come to Las Cruces to teach:
Small Doll Quilt or Four Block Table Runner/Quilt As You Go

With two quick cuts you’ve made your four blocks. You’ll learn the crazy cutting process; decorative stitch quilting and the quilt-as-you go joining techniques on this super easy project and you’re off to the races! Many quilters go on to make several quilts a year with these techniques – they are just that easy!

She will also present a Trunk Show and Lecture:

Quilt As You Go—A Progression of Techniques Trunk Show by Marguerita McManus
Starting with quilts from her best selling first book, “Crazy Shortcut Quilts”, you’ll see how her quick cutting technique, combined with decorative sewing machine stitches, makes stunning quilts.

Fat-quarter crazy quilts,  modern quilts, T-shirt quilts, finishing up UFO’s, and gorgeous layer cake quilts—she’s made them all with one quilt-as-you-go-technique, sometimes with just a little bit of a twist.  You’ll see 30 quilts from her five books plus a few unpublished quilts.
Marguerita will explain the process of making each quilt (including her ‘true confessions’) while a sample is passed through the room for close, hands-on, inspection.

You may have seen Marguerita on YouTube, where she has over two and a half million views to her sewing, quilting and ergonomics videos!

Information about registration will be published soon!

In-House Workshops

Workshops are given occasionally throughout the year by guild members or friends of the guild. There is usually no charge to members for these workshops and the focus on these classes is to improve quilting skills or to create new projects. These workshops are listed in the events calendar and complete descriptions will be in the newsletter. Workshop signups are at the meetings or by email/telephone the month prior to the scheduled class.

Quilting Lessons

Quilting workshops are given regularly for anyone wanting to learn how to quilt or how to improve their quilting techniques.  Stuck on a project?  Need help in choosing a pattern?  Do you need color recommendations or auditions? – let Frances Campbell and her committee guide you.  Reach her by emailing ranchoescondido@msn.com and briefly describe your needs and she will get right back to you.

Turtle Camp

This is a biennial, two-day, in-town retreat held in odd-numbered years. It is a gift to ourselves for the work we contribute to the biennial Quilt Show. You may spend two days at Turtle Camp, all day, or any part of either day. There are demonstrations, workshops, door prizes, and a complimentary dinner is served the first night. Turtle Camp is FREE to all members in good standing.
