Community Service

Quilt Production and Distribution

The guild maintains a Community Cupboard of quilting supplies and finished quilts. Guild members are expected to participate in the construction of quilts, and other related service projects. Group sew-ins are held throughout the year to encourage participation in completing quilts. We provide quilts to those in need and respond to every request for them. Several hundred quilts have been supplied to abuse shelters, hospice, the community run day care center, and individuals undergoing prolonged medical treatments. In addition we have sewn pillowcases for area children’s facilities, tote bags for children in foster care and dog beds for many animal shelters.

Quilts can be requested by anyone in the community.  They are given out to persons suffering catastrophic loss (house fire, flood, etc.) or emotional trauma (abuse, serious illness, etc.). In addition, we have provided dozens of raffle and auction quilts to local groups to raise funds for community work.

We accept donations of any type fabric, sewing notions and batting. Donations not relevant to quilt construction are passed on to other community groups doing service work, or self help.

Cheryl Price, Libby Pruett, Lee Beatty and the ladies of Loose Threads Bee were interviewed and photographed by Christian Valle of KRWG TV Las Cruces regarding the community outreach done by Las Colcheras Guilt Guild.  It’s a very nice piece, the ladies did a wonderful job.  Please check out the video at:

Community Outreach

Frances Campbell, Community Outreach Program Chair

kids quiltLas Colcheras Quilt Guild is involved in quilting and sewing lessons for the community. Student classes are held in after-school programs during the school year and the summer programs are held at Community centers in the county.

The students construct quilts, bags, purses, soft stuffed dolls and balls. Instructions are given for anything the students are interested in making. Crochet classes are held for interested students. Adult classes are held in Community centers in Dona Ana County.

The ladies in the adult classes make quilts, pillows, purses with zippers, draw string bags, baby blankets, clothes, curtains and many other projects they are interested in making to improve their living conditions. Sewing machines are loaned to students to work at home.

The adults and students display their completed projects at the Southern New Mexico State Fair in Dona Ana County and at the Alamogordo Festival of Quilts in Otero County. The students also display their quilts at Las Colcheras Quilt Show in Las Cruces. They have received great reviews!

Many lives are enhanced working in this program. All class members are proud of their work. Their self-esteem is given a boost and all are sleeping warmer under the quilt they have made. For information on how to get involved contact the Community Outreach Chairman found in the Officers and Chairmen Listing or on our website.
