Community Service
Comfort Quilts
The guild's involvement with the community has a long, shared history. We provide quilts to those in need and respond to every request for them. The guild routinely provides quilts to abuse shelters, hospice, the community run day care center, and individuals undergoing prolonged medical treatments. If you, or your organization would like to apply for a comfort quilt for someone in treatment or the above facilities, please click here for an application.
Las Colcheras Pink Campaign
The current president of Las Colcheras, Libby Pruett, issued a special challenge for the guild in March 2011. As part of our community service program, we teamed with Cowboys for Cancer Research (C4CR) and Aggies are Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP) in their annual campaign to support cancer research in New Mexico. Libby's challenge was threefold: create at least 100 quilts for cancer patients undergoing treatment, find sponsors for these quilts whose donations would support cancer cure research, and create auction quilts for the Cowboys for Cancer Research fundraiser. The quilts were pink or at least had a touch of pink fabric. Each quilt was "adopted" by a sponsor who donated at least $25.00 to C4CR.
The challenge was a great success. The quilt count reached 150, three auction quilts were created and a total of over $4,000 was raised for research through our efforts. The quilts were displayed at Ashley's Furniture Home Center in September and October. After the exhibit, many quilts were disbursed to appreciative local cancer treatment centers, hospitals, and to individuals facing a serious illness.
This Challenge is over but contributions are always welcome for quilt supplies. All money received will be deposited to the guild's Barbara Nixon Memorial Charity fund and will be used for our charitable work. Donations of fabric, batting, machines, and other sewing/quilting supplies are also welcome. Contact us at lcnmquilters@aol.com.
